A native of Crescent, Oklahoma, he attended Douglas High School. He displayed his basketball talents one memorable week his senior season by scoring 70, 54 and 62 points in three consecutive games during a tournament. Over 200 colleges and universities vied for his basketball abilities. He selected Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, which he attended from 1956-1960.
In his junior season, he was the third-highest scorer in the nation, trailing only All-Americans and future professional legends Elgin Baylor of Seattle and Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati. During that year, he outscored such greats as Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West. He averaged 30 points per game during his college career. After college, he opted to tryout for the Globetrotters instead of pursuing a career in the NBA.
His goal as a member of the Globetrotters was to, "make people happy all around the world," Ausbie said. As a youngster, he acquired the nickname "Goose," but the team already had a member named Goose, so his named was changed to "Geese."
He was the fans' favorite and said by teammates to be the most loyal Globetrotter. He later became the Vice President/Global Ambassador of the team under his teammate, Mannie Jackson
